<<Speaking of those totally unprepared for the world of work and responsibility, simply throwing more money at public schools is far from the answer. >>

Wish my district would figure that out. Just read where my district is spending $7,500 per student per year. Beautiful schools with Olympic sized pools, every kid from the 2nd grade on has a computer, not shares - has. 20 kids or less per class. 20 - 15 = 10 results.

Without changing the incentive structure in many of these places, and hoping for a broader cultural change in consequence, many of these problems will be intractable. I believe that we should make young unwed mothers live in a supervised environment in order to receive benefits, with school and work requirements. I think we should make reception of an adult drivers license conditional upon high school graduation, and graduation contingent upon passing a competency exam in English and math. I also think we should lengthen the school day, to include a special study hall, and provide a safe haven in the afternoon, to ensure the completion of "home work". Anyway, these are among the things that might begin to make a dent......
