Of more immediate concern is Tuesday's meeting
of the Federal Open Market Committee, which is
widely expected to maintain its 6 1/2 % target for
the federal-funds rate but drop its tightening bias
in favor of a neutral stance. "There's no conclusive
evidence that the economy is falling apart, so I
think the Fed will hold policy unchanged," says
Anthony Karydakis, senior financial economist at
Banc One Capital Markets in Chicago. "The
economy is proving to be more resilient than the
market is assuming right now."
