This is not unique to GSM. Same applies to CDMA. Potentially more so.

This is where PKI potentially plays, whether RSA or ECC.

SIM, UIM, & R-UIM will enable. Algorithms, Keys and Certs on the IC card.

Potential edge to GSM here.

Strong authentication however will only be as strong as a country allows it to be. Same with encryption.
