hcm1943, I once got a false virus alarm from McAfee. Now I use Norton. You can try it free [scroll to bottom] symantec.com

If it was me I'd disable McAfee temporarily to install the driver [since it came from a trusted source]. But first I'd check if Norton antivirus also finds the virus.

I've been told all antivirus software occasionally gives a false alarm.

a virus message that identified the virus as "backdoor-bl"

from norton's virus list of viruses that nav protects against, i see

backdoor.bla.trojan
backdoor.blackd
backdoor.bladerunner

i run networkice's blackice defender, and i have had norton antivirus give me an alarm on backdoor.blackd. it turned out to be a problem that norton repaired with a new definition. you may be experiencing the same thing, if you run blackice.
