Al Gore and the Internet

"Contrary to popular opinion, the Internet as a complete, recognized entity did NOT exist in name or in form until
the Congress passed a bill unifying several nets in the 80's, including the original DOD ARPANET, and turned the
resulting entity over to administration by public and private organizations for the common good.

Al Gore was instrumental in the successful passage of the important legislation that fundamentally defined and created this publicly accessible entity - the Internet.

Even though people have gotten a good chuckle from the oft-quoted out-of-context misrepresentations of his
remarks, truth be told we internet-niks truly owe Al Gore a debt of gratitude for his leading role in legally defining
and creating this great thing we know as the Internet."

Dear FaultLine, thanks for the explanation. I always wondered why Gore made that statement.

Cheers,

Mephisto
