As you probably know, the Special Prosecutor law was abolished, I believe in 1999. The Dems were the ones who wanted to abolish it this time, although they were the ones who wanted it to begin with.

If you want to talk about bitterness, most Republicans will tell you that the indictment by Special Prosecutor Lawrence Walsh of Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger at 4:00 p.m. on the Friday before the election destroyed George Bush Senior. Just like the last minute revelation of Dubya's DWI record almost cost him the election.

No Republican doubts that so-called "Independent Counsel" Lawrence Walsh is anything but.

But rereading that moment in history, it seems eerily familiar. Accusations by the Independent Counsel that the White House and the agencies are stone-walling, refusing to turn over documents, even to the point of perjury. I don't think anyone really believes that Reagan didn't know what was going on.

Just one more episode of life inside the Beltway. The moral of the lesson is, don't lie, and if you do lie, don't get caught. But if you do get caught . . . . handle it better than Nixon did.
