Well the following is known.. the demo xBox MS showed off first was GP hardware with an athlon on board. I'm not sure exactly what parts of the specs nVidia couldn't pull off, but my guess is that without the GP approach to the graphics pipeline, nVidia likely couldn't get enough bandwidth into the GPU.

tile based rendering which is much more efficient and would reduce overdraw than the current traditional rendering. It is smaller, and uses less power and requires less memory bandwidth. This is the Mosaic technology that 3dfx was praising not so long ago.. As for the Nvidia can't make part, I think the memory bandwidth will be hard to meet, so tile based rendering will help a lot.
