Re: Gateway has them...but I don't know who else.

The default configuration for a Micron Millenia XP is the 1.2GHZ version. If Micron were having any trouble getting 1.2GHZ parts, I doubt they'd make that the first choice you see when putting together a system.

It looks like AMD priced the 1.2GHZ part way too low. Demand for the fastest part has traditionally been good for at least a $100 increment at retail. Part of it may be that AMD expected much of the high end demand to move to P4, and that just isn't happening (not that there isn't some movement, but it appears to be much less than AMD expected). So they've found that demand for the 1.2GHZ part at the prices they've set is presently higher than they can supply.

Judging by the very small delta between the 1.1GHZ parts and the 1.2GHZ parts from almost every vendor, one of two things is almost certainly true. Either the vendors are absolutely certain that they are about to be inundated with 1.2GHZ parts (less likely, there would still be bigger jump from 1.1 to 1.2 than there is at present) or the vendors are absolutely certain that the 1.2 is going to be AMD's upper midrange chip (a sizeable step down from its fastest part) very soon.

If 1.2 parts were going to be the top end and scarce for as long as another month, there would be a larger jump in price from the 1.1 to the 1.2GHZ parts.

The current pricing, IMHO, indicates a volume release of something from AMD within a month. I suppose that's Palamino, and not a paper release, either.

Regards,

Dan
