LG's senior official for the project said, ``The consortium formally requested the opening of screening results and a public explanation of the bidding process from the Ministry of Information and Communication.'' Adding that the decision is unacceptable, the company also indicated that it would not attempt a bid for the synchronous mode license next year. ``We can't decide right now whether to apply for the bidding for the synchronous mode in January or not,'' a LG Glocom official said on condition of anonymity. LG officials also criticized that Friday's decision reflects the government's will because six out of nine judges in the screening committee are from state research institutes such as the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and Korea National Defense University. The third largest group said that it regrets that LG, which it argues is ahead of other contenders in the asynchronous mode, was rejected the bidding. ``It is hard for LG to understand the government's decision in view of our financial status, technological advantages and business capabilities,'' he complained. Meanwhile, Hanaro Telecom, which was also rejected in its solo bid for synchronous mode license, is allegedly planning to bid again for one synchronous license next year by forming an alliance with LG Group. Market analysts anticipated that the domestic telecommunication market would face a big change with Friday's decision on third-generation mobile telecom operators. SK Telecom and Korea Telecom, which already own a combined 85 percent of the local cell-phone market, will continue to dominate while LG may rechart its business strategy regarding mobile telecommunication. << - Eric -
