Why is it that the traditions of remote tribes in the Amazon river basin are supposed to be respected, but not the customs of our neighbor?

"is it o.k. if I write this?", my daughter asked today. Sign of the times. She is writing a school project, and she chose for a topic a family Christmas tradition. We draw names of family members then do little things for them for a week. Each little favor allows us to put a straw in the manger to soften the bed for baby Jesus' birth. The point is to remember the spirit of the season. But my daughter thinks it is probably not alright for her to write about it and take it to school. I wonder how she ever got that idea in free America?
