Many small mines are having problems, but the big ones are doing just fine, with many expanding. On another topic someone provided a list of about 5 mines that were closing, including Andacollo and Homestake, BUT the combined production was easily replaced by the 550K-600K annual production from the new Geita mine started producing the summer. Yes, we will have fewer mines and fewer mining companies, but gold production does not show any sign of decreasing (almost flat for 2000) Meanwhile, silver production is going up.
