NEC says to supply servers to HP, Bull

TOKYO, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Japanese electronics maker NEC Corp said on Monday it would begin supplying computer servers to Hewlett-Packard Co (NYSE:HWP - news) and Bull as early as next March for sale in Japan, the United States and Europe.

The deal aims to boost NEC's market share in the high-end network computing business, which is growing rapidly with the rise of information technology worldwide.

The new servers, able to operate as many as 16 Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) 64-bit microprocessors simultaneously, will be supplied to the U.S. and French computer makers for sale under their own brands.

NEC aims to sell 2,000 of the servers under its own and its partners' brands in the first two years of production, a company spokesman said.

At 0105 GMT, NEC shares were down 0.87 percent at 2,275 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, in line with a weak tone across the high-tech sector after a drop in the technology-heavy U.S. Nasdaq composite index (^IXIC - news) on Friday.
