Cellhigh, re: PC Market
For the past couple of years the average consumer has been getting more power in a PC than he needs. That's probably most true for Internet access. Broadband access hasn't grown as predicted, with ~ 3 million connections. (Heavily weighted to corporate locations, I suspect). We've just about reached PC saturation in the US, (home and office), which indicates it's a replacement market. While the Internet is the big killer ap, it doesn't require an upgrade for most users.
In the Consumer space, there are some neat, affordable peripherals that are catching on. Digital cameras are a hot item this Christmas. High res cameras have become very popular and affordable. The editing software that comes with them is easy to use and creates very nice output. Of course those that get cameras will also want a photo quality printer.
CD burners are also hot, especially for the youngsters. And as users grow more PC literate, they're adding CDR/W for back-up and disaster recovery. And you can do wonders for graphics performance by upgrading to some of the new products from Nvidia, etc.
These new gadgets don't need 1GHz machines to function adequately. Look's to me like this season is one of buying add-ons that utilize the power of what you already have.
(Again, I'm talking about the average consumer).
Q3 this year was actually pretty good for PC ships, both QOQ and YOY. I wonder if this strength is enhanced by back to schools sales? More and more kids entering college need their own PC. A seasonal shift in PC demand going forward?
