i understand. i also understand the type of person who feels that way and i'm underwhelmed (i didn't take that as your position).

barb, people are far to simple minded. they don't want to think. "black people be bad, white people be good" is the intellectual level of far too many people. i'm with you. i enjoy getting to know PEOPLE.

i know white people, black people first generation american vietnamese, filipino (sp?), indian, hispanics, guamanian, japanese, korean, romanian, spanish, etc and i KNOW that there are good people and there are bad people in every group.

racism strikes me as being as rational as astrology. there is too much diversity in big groups (defined by dtaes or color or whatever) to stereotype them all.

i look for the good while being wary the bad might be there. this approach has worked very well. if the bad comes, i deal with it, but i REFUSE to assume the worst in people.

but, alas, a coworker of mine actually told people recently, "i refuse to work for an indian" b/c a an indian gentleman was applying for a job that he'd report to.

my response would be simple. "bye."

now, if they hire the guy, i might not like him either. but, i can't tell that by knowing he's east indian. i will decide based on his decision making process.

having said all that, the ignorant majority has used race in the past to punish different ethnic groups. this punishment should stop. african amercians, on avg, should have a similar opportunity to a good education as do white children, on avg. i like to base things off of need, better than race, though. i can restate the above, more appropriately, by saying poor children should have the similar educational opportunities as their more wealthy counter parts. it just so happens that african american children tend to be less well off economically through no fault of their own.

i do not think michael jordan's kids should get a scholarship to school based on being african american. period. to me this is reasonable.

>>I'm not sure why people break things up by race anyway. You never hear how the vote of the red haired or brown eyed people split. I really get tired of hearing things broken out based on skin color. When I filled out the census earlier this year I put down 'other' as my race and filled in 'human' in the blank.<<

Right on. I believe that the media's constant division of people by race in reporting any story contributes to the impression that a person's race is somehow vitally important.

Even this past weekend, reports on W's first appointments continually mentioned the fact that some were black, one was a black woman, and one was Hispanic. To report on Condoleeza Rice being appointed National Security Advisor and say only that she is black is a great disservice to her. I think the fact that she is a highly disciplined scholar who speaks fluent Russian is much more significant.

I don't think the question is "Can't we all just get along?" I think the right question is, "Can't we all just shut up about race for five minutes?"
