I believe that any one who is intelligent and has a good amount of general knowledge is competent to form an opinion without years of education or research specialized in this area. Sure they can be wrong, but so can the experts.

That's exactly my point. For whatever reason, lots of conservatives would rather spend a lot of time and effort to come up with their own opinions rather than trust experienced subject-matter specialists from the government who have sifted through all the competing experts; come up with findings, conclusions, and recommendations; vetted the results ad nauseum; and balanced the competing interests. I don't know why this is. Is it frontier independence, general distrust, distrust of the government in particular, a sense that those government people are wired differently or stupid or corrupt...? Since you're of that view, perhaps you can explain it. Personally, I'm not sufficiently interested or qualified to figure out all those things for myself even if I thought there were a snowball's chance in Hell of my doing it better than they. I can't imagine why anyone would reject having that research and analysis performed on their behalf.
