Cobalt, Ice, and others,

RE: Virus protection

Bottom line, virus detection programs are complete bullshit. All they do is protect you from "known" viruses and the type of viruses that are "amatuer".

The "brilliant" hackers create their own viruses, and they are "new". This means nothing can detect them. Think about the outbreaks you've read of over the last few years. You'd read something like Norton or Macafee could detect it with the latest download. But this is after the fact, after the virus is already out there.

The only thing these programs detect is what amatuers are doing. These are the teenage hackers that download something off the Internet and try to spread it. It's "existing" if it's detected. If it's "new", ***NONE*** of these programs will find it.

FWIW

CB, do you know how to run regedit? If so look for anything with McAfee or "Mc". If you find entries that refer to McAfee remove those(They will be obvious in that it will use the full word "McAfee" in the key).

Also, if my memory is correct McAfee creates a dir under your Windows directory. I do remember it throws stuff everywhere on your harddrive. Can't remember if it puts anything under "C:\Program Files\Common File" or not?

I am running 2000 on this machine so may be a bit off on that path for 98 but I think that is it. Maybe this will help.
