a Compass will not fail you. GPS will... Very true, which is why I carry both. Unfortunately my compass is not lighted. So when the flashlight died, it would not have been of much use to me even had I had it. It is quite amazing how dark the woods can get. Stunningly dark. And with fog it is almost hopeless. At least I didn't have to worry about walking up on a grizzly or something, though brown bears in my area are getting uncomfortably belligerent these days.
