OPENTV DELIVERS TECHNOLOGY TRANSFORMING THE INTERNET INTO RICH INTERACTIVE TELEVISION

OpenTV Publisher Launches With BSkyB's New Interactive Television Offering

Mountain View, CA -- December 12, 2000 -- OpenTV (NASDAQ and AEX: OPTV), the world's leading interactive television and media solutions company, announces the launch of OpenTV Publisher, an OpenTV technology which facilitates rapid delivery of Internet content to cable and satellite television viewers worldwide. OpenTV Publisher represents another easy to deploy and superior OpenTV technology solution for cable and satellite operators implementing interactive television. OpenTV Publisher debuted with the recent launch of BSkyB's digital Sky Text offering to its four million digital homes.

British Sky Broadcasting, the UK's leading digital broadcaster, this week announced that it was extending its array of television-based e-commerce and online applications with the launch of digital text featuring on-screen interactive betting. BSkyB is authoring a dedicated service to provide digital text which, in comparison to analogue text, is media rich, has faster navigation and is distributed via digital transmission. BSkyB passes the content in XML through the OpenTV Publisher platform, which translates the content for television.

The launch of OpenTV Publisher supports OpenTV's client server strategy of providing cutting edge technology that takes popular Internet content and functionality, which is then easily optimized for a superior presentation on television. It is a TV-centric look and feel, not just Web pages on a television screen.

This server-based solution becomes a gateway allowing content developers to take advantage of the standards-based infrastructure widely available on the Internet, allowing the re-purposing of this content for digital televisions systems around the world.

Critical to operators, OpenTV Publisher embraces OpenTV's strategy of providing highly-scalable solutions that enable large subscriber bases to be reached with minimal infrastructure costs. OpenTV solutions are proven, easy to deploy and provide the ability to deliver superior content.

"OpenTV Publisher is another offering which reinforces OpenTV's broadband strategy as the company enables cable and satellite operators to make Web-based content available to their consumers," said James Ackerman, OpenTV President and Chief Operating Officer. "We are committed to building technology that enables content and creative communities to deliver their assets to the broadest possible audience, in the easiest possible way."

OpenTV also offers multichannel operators a variety of Content on Demand™ services, which are completed applications that can be launched with an operator's unique branding. These OpenTV Publisher-based services developed by OpenTV Interactive Studios include News, Weather, Sports, Finance, Entertainment, Customer Care and Shopping.
