I used to live in Costa Rica where medicine is socialized to a great extent, but Catholocism is the "official" religion I know of two scenarios that actually happened.

A campesino/county woman, mother of eight, who sought a tubal ligation is was told, oh you could have another half a doern kids, with a pat on the butt. he meant this as a compliment.

In in the capital the doctor of a stressed out mother of four may told the husband, "another child could kill her" thereby justifying her sterilization in the eyes of the husband, and the church.

Neither really ad a choice, or a right even to birth control. Luck of the draw. The only choice was that of the doctor.

I think it is about liberty.
