I dont think that HSDPA is based on HDR....but rather is an adapatation of 1xTREME onto W-CDMA. The key feature to HDR seems to be the separation of voice and data into two separate channels allowing a larger latency. This is not being done with HDSPA (as far as I can tell). It looks like HSDPA is uses the same techniques as 1xTREME to provide increased throughput to the user....higher order modulation, fast cell-site selection, adaptive modulation and coding and a couple of other things I dont understand ;-). Here are a couple of documents that I have found describing HSDPA so far....unfortunately the 3GPP does not label the .pdf files on their FTP site. Note that Nokia and Motorola seem to be the driving force in the 3GPP as well.... ftp://ftp.3gpp.org/TSG_RAN/WG1_RL1/TSGR1_14/Docs/PDFs/R1-00-0868.pdf ftp://ftp.3gpp.org/TSG_RAN/WG1_RL1/TSGR1_16/Docs/PDFs/R1-00-1316.pdf The two ways I have found documents so far is to look through the reference list and try and find those docs or the reports have the titles to the various documents. Also....a couple of days ago, I was looking over some old links. Found the following post by GP over on Yahoo.... A couple of days ago, I was looking over some old links. Found the following post by GP over on Yahoo....messages.yahoo.com For the edification of others on the thread, QCOM's initial patents begin expiring around 2010; however, the license agreements are evergreen, i.e. as long as Qualcomm continues to receive patents germane to CDMA, and this IPR is incorporated in product designs, the royalty period is extended. So, the answer is: royalties have a minimum life of eleven years and a maximum life of forever. It doesnt matter if it is an adaptation of HDR or 1xTREME....they will both have IP from Qualcomm. However, Q needs to get more involved in the standards process of the 3GPP. Architectural control (not patent) of the standard would bring a significant advantage to Qualcomm and SpinCo.... Slacker
