So you want people to be sheep without there own opinions?

Certainly not. I have formed bunches of opinions of my own and I wouldn't discourage anyone else from doing the same. I'm sorry that my posts gave that impression. My question was not why anyone would form his own opinions. My question was why would anyone be so [fill in the blank] of the analysis done by the government on their behalf that they feel compelled to discard it in favor or their own analysis or, even worse, assume that the truth is diametrically opposed to what the government says. I've been looking for someone to fill in the blank and I thought you might be someone who could do so.

They are just as likely to have their own agenda and even if they don't they are no more guaranteed of being correct then any other expert. Even if I thought that they were unbiased geniuses, would I have to change my mind every time a new administration comes in and all of these opinions change?

Although I didn't get the direct answer I was hoping for, your comments have provided some additional insights and I thank you for them. I think that some of problem probably comes from people being so far away from the mechanisms of government that the role of the civil service and its relationship with the administration, among other things, is not apparent.
