Morning Steve
"Have any of the accounts of the life and doings of Jesus been confirmed by documents other than those produced by followers of the Christian faith?
The short answer is yes. If you are interested I will have to dig a bit to find them. Try Jewish writings of the period first. although vehemently against Jesus as Messiah, they counter the arguments for the resurrection, thereby confirming that someone at that time was claiming such a thing.

Is it possible to achieve historical confirmation of the central elements of the story: the immaculate conception and the resurrection?

The nature of historical "Proof" differs from that of say, how you verify the claim that there is a bag of cookies in the cupboard. Read the objections to The Gospel of Thomas that I posted earlier and compare that with the evidence for the bible. If the bible is to be rejected then every other literary work of antiquity must also be seriously doubted. Your doubt seems to be based on the assumption that miracles are impossible more than a lack of evidence, NO?
I have to run for now. Have a good day
