NTT DoCoMo 3G Service Moves A Step Closer

TOKYO, JAPAN, 2000 DEC 18 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes. Japanese cellular
network operator NTT DoCoMo's plans to begin commercial operation of the world's first
third-generation (3G) mobile phone service next year move a step closer today with the
announcement by a supplier of the start of its shipments.

Osaka-based Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd has begun sending base
transceiver station equipment to NTT DoCoMo.

The latter company plans to have 3G services - offering high-speed wireless data, music and
video transfer - up and running by May 2001.

Matsushita has concentrated its own 3G development on wideband code division multiple
