A DC insider told me that the name of GE's Jack Welch has been heard for Energy Secy. Maybe just a wild rumor, but thought I'd pass it on.

Tommaso,

Commercial nuclear power plants are much safer than naval nuclear plants with respect to automatic safety systems and radioactive containment systems.

At one time (pre-TMI) a case could be made for the Navy's superior operator training programs, but that is no longer the case. All commercial plants have their own dedicated training simulator and their training programs are far better than the Navy's. IMO

Finally, no way could a navy plant operate at a profit. After all, its government operated <g>.

San Diego at any given time has 4+ nuclear reactors running in the bay. Much of Southern California's power needs are satisfied by San Onofre, a 2+ Gigawatt nuclear power plant (2 reactors running) just south of San Clemente.
