PC Sales in Japan for Fourth Week of November Break Record in Value
December 18, 2000 (TOKYO) -- PC sales for the fourth week of November 2000 (Nov. 20-26) marked notable growth at volume retailers of household electric appliances, especially with an extra holiday on Nov. 23, Labor Thanksgiving Day.

Sales in units for the first week of November had already surpassed last December's peak figure, but sales in value for the fourth week also broke the record high marked last December.

According to GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 volume retailers of household electric appliances, PC sales for the fourth week of November 2000 gained 25.3 percent in units and 26.5 percent in value from the previous week. (112.59 yen = US$1)

Compared with the same week a year ago (Nov. 22-28, 1999), PC sales increased 43.7 percent in units and 28.3 percent in value. The average PC retail price rose 1,749 yen from the previous week's 179,321 yen to 181,070 yen.

The high growth rate of 25.3 percent in sales in terms of units, desktop and notebook PCs combined, compared with the previous week was the fourth highest figure this year and the first time since the fourth week of May when a 29.9 percent increase was recorded.

Also in terms of value, PC sales marked a notable growth of 26.5 percent from the previous week, the first time in about six months. The PC retail market is growing steadily toward the peak winter season.
