Well as we all know, the canidates only need to win a few large states and they have the election.

Gore won most of the large states and lost. Bush won what, large-state-wise? Texas, Ohio and Florida?

I support the Electoral College concept, just not the Electors themselves. Florida's less than 0.5% difference mandated the automatic recount. The total US vote difference was also less than 0.5%. We would have had Florida and Palm Beach nationwide without the partitioning inherent in the Electoral College system.

The Electoral College system actually weights the small states' votes heavier than the larger states since the smaller states have at least three votes. I guess if I sided with the party that was disadvantaged by the disproportionate power of the rural areas, i.e. the Democrats, I might favor eliminating the Electoral College also. Then getting elected would depend solely on how much extra government spending you were willing to promise to the big cities, which seems to be what the Democrats want anyway.

BTW, in an Investors Business Daily editorial the results of some poll that a news agency conducted were mentioned that show that 50% of those polled believe the government has its own money, 11% aren't sure, and only 39% know that the government's money is collected from taxpayers. This shocking result shows why certain segments of the population favor large government programs. These people really do believe that they're free.
