That is absolutely on the mark, quite devastatingly accurate. I'd read that book when it was first published and was struck by Sack's ability to articulate painful truths clearly and without judgement. Thank you for finding it.

Another take on "the Great Communicator":

I was an assistant professor at USC in the late '80's. At the time, Ronald Reagan wanted to establish a library at UCLA, and they refused him. So, he went across town to USC (a private and VERY conservative school), where they welcomed him with open arms.

One day I was teaching a class and half of them were absent. I asked the attending students where my class was. They replied that they were hearing Ronald Reagan speak on campus. I then informed them that no one was excused from my class to hear Ronald Reagan. They booed me.
Then I told them that they were excused if they had gone to see dementia up close.

They hissed and booed.
