I think they (Thomas and O'Connor) are less qualified as intellects than many others who Reagan and Bush, Sr. could have chosen at the time because of what they have written, what they have spoken, the questions they asked and didn't ask, and many other aspects of their intellectual capacity (or lack thereof) that they have displayed publicly. It has NOTHING to do with race or sex. It has do to with brainpower, or the lack thereof.

BTW, I think O'Connor is less intellectually dishonest than Thomas is. And while I have serious questions about the intellectual honesty of Scalia and Rehnquist, I have no doubt whatsoever about their intellectual capacities.
