2 earnings plays come through after the close: ESIO, SLR

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Solectron beat first-quarter revenue and earnings estimates on Monday evening. Shares advanced and erased a regular-session loss.

Elsewhere, Electro Scientific beat quarterly Wall Street earnings estimates.

Solectron (SLR: news, msgs) shares rose $1.78 to $28.50 in third-market trading after closing down $1.32 to $26.72.

Solectron reported first-quarter earnings of $190.6 million, or 29 cents a share, compared with $109.8 million, or 18 cents a share, during the same quarter last year.

Analysts surveyed by First Call expected earnings of 28 cents a share on revenue of $5.05 billion.

Revenue was $5.7 billion, compared with $2.8 billion during the same quarter last year.

Gross margins narrowed by 20 basis points to 8.5 percent, compared with the previous quarter, due to higher materials management costs.

Also, the company said a constricted supply of components began to ease in the quarter.

Second-quarter sales are expected to be between $5.4 billion and $5.7 billion with earnings of 29 or 30 cents a share. Analysts had been expecting revenue of $5.1 billion and earnings of 28 cents a share, on average.

Also, Electro Scientific (ESIO: news, msgs) beat second-quarter earnings estimates Monday evening.

The company, which makes tools to build complex electronic equipment, reported second-quarter earnings of $27.7 million, or $1 a share, compared with $6.9 million, or 26 cents a share, during the comparable period last year.
