News: Local 'Several guns' found in man's vehicle near Bush ranch By BRIAN GAAR Tribune-Herald staff writer Authorities said a Florida man had "several guns" inside his car Saturday when he was arrested near President-elect George W. Bush's Crawford ranch. John Michael Hughes, 29, of Pensacola, Fla., was driving a rental car along Prairie Chapel Road, near Rainey Road, when he was stopped and arrested at 6 p.m., officials said. McLennan County Sheriff Larry Lynch said Hughes was arrested because he was carrying a handgun he did not have a license for. Hughes was taken into custody by a sheriff's deputy who is assigned to Bush's security detail. He was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor, authorities said. Lynch said there were several guns taken from Hughes' car, but wouldn't say how many, the types or caliber of firearms recovered. Hughes was alone in the car, authorities said. Authorities said Hughes didn't make it to the ranch's entrance, which is off Rainey Road. Lynch wouldn't estimate how close Hughes came to the ranch. No shots were fired and there were no reported injuries. Lynch said he didn't know if Bush was at the ranch at the time. On Sunday morning, Bush's motorcade left Crawford for Austin, where he boarded a jet to Washington. Bush’s press office employees wouldn't comment on the incident Monday. Lynch said he hopes incidents like this do not occur often but said some are bound to happen. "There will certainly be things that pop up when you have the president of the United States living in the county, but we hope it's not too often," he said. "We want him to enjoy his time here." "Gold is a buy here with a nice recession around the corner, don't you think? " Don't know, how did Gold do during the most recent recession, 91,92. Bush had a very short meeting with Greenspan compared to Clinton's when he first came into office. I'd hate to see some kind of war between the two break out.
