I know of no competing NAS products, with the possible exception of the newest EMC NAS offering, that use OS's built from scratch to be filer appliances. The rest are UNIX-based or Windows based.

The CroStor product is a non-standard OS, but lacks an efficient file layout or RAID scheme. So it's CPU execution may be exceptional, but its disk I/O management is not special at all.
