Techplayer,

The news release indicates that Cyras has four customers in trials. Commercial shipments are anticipated by Q301. See Ciena's news release.

My understanding is that the Cyras system is considerably more robust than similar products offered by Cisco and Redback.

Also note that Ciena's acquisition price for this product is a small fraction of what Cisco paid for Cyras' sister company two years ago...$2.6 vs $7 billion, and is also considerably less than what Redback paid for Cyras' other sister company, Siara.

The timing is perfect, the market is ripe, the price is right, the product fits nicely into Ciena's product slate, and Ciena will again, out-execute the competition.

This is a blockbuster acquisition, and it has my vote.

>>what is your opinion of Cyras (keeping in mind that they have no sales and the
product is not available even in a scaled down form<<

Cerent also had no sales when it was bought. (Run rate now over a billion, right?) And where did you hear the product is not available? I am looking for the articles I read a couple of weeks ago where the trials customers are actually named but have not found them yet. But as for my opinion, I am not yet qualified to do so as I have not done enough DD yet. Got lots of work to do here...<g>

TP, Seems interesting that Nortel apparently chooses to not compete in this highly competitive and fast growing space with Cisco, Redback and now Ciena. Any idea why?
