Also note that Ciena's acquisition price for this product is a small fraction of what Cisco paid for Cyras' sister company two years ago...$2.6 vs $7 billion, and is also considerably less than what Redback paid for Cyras' other sister company, Siara

What do you mean by sister company? Is there some formal relationship, or do you just mean that all three are targetting the same network area with comparable products?

Thanks

jgh, does this deal tell us there is a lot of life left in SONET, especially in the metro access space?

"The deal, which is worth about $2.6 billion, strengthens Ciena's presence in the edge of optical networks by giving it a powerful Sonet-based multiservice provisioning platform (see Cyras: The Next Cerent? )."

jghutchinson, does the timing for the sale by owners of Cyras after raising 150 million to run to IPO make you suspicious? In this world of incredible egos, selling for .4-.6X what the competition sold for also makes me suspicious. tp

jghutchison, What do you make of this?

"Ciena also said it would write off $1.7 billion of goodwill incurred in its acquisition of Cyras Systems"

Does this mean that they finally realized that they were snookered?
