Are you implying that AMD's market share is higher than it is? Seems to me that with less than 20% market share, supplying to a couple of big OEMs along with all the SD shops would be sufficient in times like these -- when those OEMs have the only machines over 1 GHz (that don't come with RDRAM). In other words, Gateway and Micron may have made arrangements to get an adequate supply from AMD before the market slowdown, and maybe AMD is now honoring that agreement? AMD has shown this kind of arrangement with their flash (i.e. keeping the flash clients that they DO have happy, rather than supplying less flash than requested to everyone and ticking them all off), so why not processors? Anyone know details of how processor supply arrangements are made?

I just hope the second to last sentence of yours doesn't also explain Mr. Joe Consumer's sentiment with regard to PC purchases in general: ("I don't buy it.").

RE:"You mean Compaq with their clout can't get some 1.2s, or doesn't want/need any?"

Seems as though they don't need them. If they did they would have them. Gateway and Micron have them.
Sounds like a product mix decision by Compaq.

when the 1.13 GHz PIII disappeared from the big OEM websites, it was an Intel problem. When the AMD 1.2 disappears, it's a consumer shift thing.

I think AMD might have relatively poor yields (or to make Elmer happy bin splits) at 1200mhz. However the problem is not comparable to the PIII 1113mhz. The 1.2ghz Athlons have not been recalled and you can buy one from Gateway or Micron or from a few other sources. Perhaps Compaq only wants them if it can get a lot and AMD doesn't have a lot for them yet but the chip is available even if it is not available in great numbers.
