HDC, the criticisms have merit until one realizes that it is very easy to create a dedicated FDDI ring (single copper segment), 802.3 segment, or other simple, cheap network topology so that the database server engine has a wide, low traffic pipe to the filer on which the data resides. Then all of the advantages of the NTAP filer (reliability, simplicity of sys admin, etc.) are realized with no performance hits because of network overhead.

One bit advantage is that all of the volume tuning/balancing that DBMs spend much time on in traditional set ups are completely eliminated with a filer used for the data store. Load balancing is automatic, backups can be done with NO downtime (SNAPSHOT, then backup from the SNAPSHOT for a consistent copy).

Growing the capacity of a filer-based database is a simple as adding a disk drive on the fly.

Suggest you browse the www.netapp.com website for some excellent white papers on the subject.

HDC, take a look at the 4th item on this list for a good recap.
