Well, ISPs charge whatever they need to in order to make a profit ;)

Not to mention what all that traffic would do to the internet which is already showing signs of 'napster' decay as I call it.

There's no question that mp3s and mpegs constitute a growing portion of the Internet trafic. I don't necessarily think that remote backups of programs would consume a whole lot of bandwidth.

However, there could be other solutions to the growing bandwidth problem on the Internet (a problem that will only grow as more people gain access to broadband). IBM has very good article on sharing bandwidth (within a LAN or WAN, but similar concepts could be extended to include much or all of the Internet).
