photovoltaics are not capable at the present time as a viable production method of large blocks of electricity. the process of creating electricity from solar cells requires an interim storage device, which is a battery bank. battery technology is weak to say the least, that is why the total electric vehicle has been pushed aside for hybrid internal combustion/electric vehicles. the battery is direct current, it must be passed through an invertor to obtain alternating current. for a house with the majority of its load being resistive, this is fine, but when you add the inductive load such as an air conditioning compressor it eats up amp hours at an incredible rate.

keep in mind that generation is one aspect of electric production...the second aspect is transmission and distribution. generation requires large rotating equipment,a generator moved by a turbine, a turbine which is driven by steam, steam which is created by a boiler, a boiler in which the water is heated by the burning of fuel. alternate ways to turn a turbine are water flow as in hydro electric....the real inefficiency comes in the transmission....extremely high voltage needed due to line losses to transmit electricity over the miles from the generation point.

all this to say, a fuel source or force be it nuclear, fossil fuel, or anything that can super heat water is needed.....

alternative energy beyond nuclear has yet to be proven not only cost effective, but scalable to the point to generate many megawatts of electricity
