Actually, I nixed it because I realized in the end that it was purely argumentative, while ignoring the main point of contention, which seems to be the nature of identity, and how much importance it should be given in our view of the universe.

Have you ever read the book called "Phantoms in the Brain"? Very interesting stuff. In one of the experiments carried out by the author, he constructs a fake "dummy" human hand. He has the subject of the experiment view the hand through a box, and has lets the subject view him stroke the dummy hand while he simultaneously strokes the subjects real hand (which is out of sight). If the stroking is accurate enough, the subject will come to associate this wooden dummy hand as his real one, and the subsequent hammer blow to the wooden hand will cause the subject physical pain.
