Your scenario assumed that the Foolish 4 and the market performed equally. The old official TMF claim is 24.62% between 1973 and 1997. During the following years, in which people were actually using this strategy, didn't perform as well. fool.com Last week, the Gardners said "our 50-year study suggests the strategy has beaten the market over that long haul by just 1.74% annually… Depending on the account size, that yearly 1.74% outperformance of the market average could get eaten away by transaction fees and capital-gains taxes." fool.com They admit my point.
