The Wall Street Journal reported that last year $.20 per share of MSFT earnings (about $1.6 billion) were from investment gains.

This year it is expected that there will be $.24 per share (of the expected $1.81 earnings per share) in investment gains.

If MSFT investments just broke even .. that would reduce their earnings by $.24 per share (lower than currently expected) .. If their investments lost money the damage would be worse.

MSFT is far from the only one who has been beefing up earnings with investment gains.

Again .. just a lack of huge gains could have a strong impact on earnings.
