You might be right. But I'm thinking we're more likely to see this continual drift lower rather than a huge drop without some external catalyst triggering it. But who knows...

Even though percentage wise you make a good argument, I would be impressed by the sheer magnitude of a one day 800pt decline. I think part of the reason the dow is 5 times higher today than when it was at 2000 is due to the productivity gains achieved. Consider the economic output (i.e. earnings) by these companies today compared to when the dow was at 2000. Trailing twelve month earnings do not disappear even if going forward looks less optimistic.

Just some market malaise ramblings...
