Seems to me the primary purposes were to (1) provide analysts with a reassuring face-to-face explanation of the lawsuit, even though the company doesn't want to say much more than it already has in its press release; (2) sugar-coat the suit with repeated mention that IATV really wants to work with DIS; and (3) present a determined face to the world that IATV has embarked on a concerted campaign to market its patented technology and ensure that others pay reasonable license fees when they use it. I didn't hear the whole cc -- was interrupted -- but mention was made at the end about some MSFT announcement, too. Other points from the question period: CEO slipped, sort of, and mentioned that they fully expect to eventually reach a settlement with DIS. (No real surprise there. The vast percentage of patent suits are settled). Things got interesting near the end with the last two questioners. Great question: in effect, "Did you talk with the FCC directly about AOL-Time Warner merger? This inspired by FCC chairman's singular public remarks singling out interactive TV content as a key consideration in fashioning FCC response to merger. Answer: 'Don't know if I should, but I'll answer...'Met w/ FCC for 1/2 day all about interactive TV. Another question: Why don't the analysts give IATV a lot of value for your patents as opposed to, for example, Gemstar? Answer: Took us 10 yrs to perfect the patents. We were 'under the radar.' Took our time, didn't over-promote vaporware (my words), did it right. Four months ago we announced at long last our patent policies. (Implies it was a watershed event signaling IATV is now ready to enforce aggressively its patented technology). Q re: recent demo with Turner Broadcasting at a conference. Answ: "Next quarter...we'll be releasing our new package of advanced interactive TV." Down the line, such enhanced technologies will "probably be done by them" (meaning program providers like Turner Broadcasting).
