Re: Assasinating a political leader, while reprehensible, is something quite different from sacrificing an innocent child in the name of politics.

Most of Europe did "sacrifice" Jewish and Gypsie children about 60 years ago in the name of racial purity --or ethnic cleansing if you will.... Yet, the US didn't deprive France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, etc. from statehood! Quite the contrary, you helped them to turn the page and move forward --until they moved backward again, that is (see Haider, Milosevic, Le Pen, Bossi, etc.)

I for one don't believe that the blind sacrifice of human life is an exclusivity of religious fanaticism. Jingoism or political fanaticism (fascism, stalinism, maoism,...) can also lead to atrocities.

Regards,

Gus.

<<Actually, that age is incorrect. The average age of GI in WWII was in the mid-20s as I recall.>>

True, but the official averages can't include accurately the many that lied so as to get into the service early. Remember that while the nation was, in official sense, out of the depression there were many parts of the nation that lagged in recovery.
