Jean-Christophe Mitterrand, African strategy adviser to his father from 1986 to 1992, and another man, writer Paul-Loup Sulitzer, were held after investigators seized computer files linking them to arms dealer Pierre Falcone, the sources said. Falcone is being probed on suspicion of illicit arms dealings and tax fraud over the alleged unauthorized sale of tens of millions of dollars of arms to Angola in 1993. The investigation into the arms sales, sparked by evidence found during searches linked to an unrelated scandal about political party slush funds, has widened in recent weeks to touch several well-known figures with African links. Police have searched the home of former top Mitterrand aide and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development head Jacques Attali and offices of former Interior Minister Charles Pasqua. Mitterrand and Sulitzer were questioned previously by police and acknowledged receiving money, but they denied that the cash was linked to any fraudulent dealings. The French financial crime squad has also placed a former director of the state arms export company, Bernard Poussier, under investigation in the widening probe. Francois Mitterrand, a Socialist, served two terms as French President from 1981 until 1995. He died in 1996. His son, a former news agency correspondent in Africa, headed an ``African cell'' from 1986 to 1992 which handled France's ties with former African colonies directly from the Elysee presidential palace. Criticized for secretive methods and dubbed ``Papa-ma-dit'' (Daddy told me) by opponents, he has been reported to be a major player in France's relations with Africa and to be on close personal terms with many African leaders. But he told a parliamentary committee in 1998 that he hardly ever was a party to high-level meetings, made only one secret trip during his tenure and was only informed after the fact of such major decisions as arms deliveries to African allies. ``This belies the power of this 'African cell' which was said to make the rain fall and the sun shine,'' he said. dailynews.yahoo.com The above news' developments will be quite interesting to watch.... It's a very smart riposte by Prez Chirac against the French/Israeli lobby (Pasqua, Attali, Strauss-Kahn et alii).
