I have similar memories of the 70s. One thing that strikes me is that it seemed that people were more friendly and easy going, but I could feel that way because I was a child then.

I was a teenager during the 70's and I remember it very differently. I thought those were the meanest times of my life. Just look at the movies of the period and there's an ugly hatred that permeates most of them.

My sister was 5 years older than I and the sexual freedom that was supposed to be liberating had just the opposite effect for a young woman. It meant that you put out sexually or you were openly ridiculed.

Everyone puts down the 80's as the decade of greed, but I think they were a great improvement on the 70's.

Chris,

re: One thing that strikes me is that it seemed that people were more friendly and easy going

Many of them were probably stoned <g>.

Being a little older I have a different memory. I remember buying stuff as soon as you got your paycheck, because you knew the same item would be more expensive in a week or a month. Saving money was foolish, it was a declining commodity. It was difficult to save for a big purchase like a downpayment on a house, a dollar you put away today was worth 88 cents a year later. If you wanted to buy something significant like a TV, do it today, because the TV would be more expensive next month.

Almost exactly opposite of recent times. Now you might put off a TV purchase on the expectation that the price would be cheaper and the TV would have more features in the future.
