<<Does anyone know how extensive is the gold hedging made by the companies that make up the XAU index?>>

To get at this number, one must look at each company as unique & consider ONLY thier NET hedged position, and at way point hedged & in what currency(ies). These interior hedge numbers differ greatly from one to another. HM for instance has reported they remain near unhedged in gold, with no gold loans, but they instead have borrowed some US$, C$ & A$, with some hedging also done in currencies - as must be done with any international company from KO to IBM.

Near every gold producer(as well as every commodity producer) uses a complex mix of puts & calls. The gold producers this thread has seen with the greatest exposure to "probelm" hedges(uncovered or under covered) were not members of the XAU.
