And what were you saying when Intel was dumping celeron at less then 1/2 of PII.

Frank,

Market forces beyond the control of either company have certainly played a major part.

Herein lies the meat of your post.

But with AMD parts selling for 1/2 of Intel parts, I just don't see Intel contributing to this problem to the same extent as AMD.

I don't think either company is in a position to arbitrarily sell cheap processors. If they aren't selling, you have two choices: 1) lower the price until they do, or 2) build up inventory (whereby they lose even more value).

Of course, many here wish there had been a 3rd option previously exercised: advertising. On the other hand, I've seen lots of Intel ads, which may or may not have made a big difference in this 'PC buyers' market. Who knows, maybe _not_ advertising (if it would have been fruitless in this environment) was a 'brilliant' move by JS. <g>

Frank,

Is the damage AMD has suffered in the last 6-8 months really worth the 1-2% market share increase they have supposedly gained?

1-2% market share increase is actually 6.6% to 13.3% increase, if you start from 15%. For Intel, it's a lot smaller percentage change, which prompts me to ask if all the Intel price cuts and resulting missed earnings were worth it, since we are talking only 1-2% change.
