Combjelly, you state some good reasons while a nuclear missile attack on the US is unlikely, but considering the devistation even a single missle would cause I think that even if there is only a one in 1000 chance of an attack in the next century or even less building a defense is worth it.

Ok, what if the Chinese try to bluff, believing that the US would not trade LA for Taiwan. This is a good example of bluster for domestic consumption. Even the dumbest Chinese leader has got to realize that the price of such a swap is more likely to include Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and a whole handful of Chinese assets.

Thats why they would bluff rather then actually attack. Even the bluff is not a likely occurance but it is something we should not leave ourselves vunerable to.

They are better off trying to use their nukes to eliminate any US carrier groups that taking out US cities.

If we had a missle defense then the Chinese might think we would be more likely to retaliate against any nuclear attack so they might be detered from this attack. Also eventually we may have an advanced and extensive defense that can defend the carriers as well. (although you still have problems like nuclear torpedos to worry about)
