Ted, another problem with the system that people are itching to deploy now is that it's failed most of its tests. Similarly, the Patriot system much ballyhooed in the Gulf war actually didn't shoot down anything, though it took years for that to come out.

Given the combination of improbable threats and unproven technology, spending a ton of money to deploy a system now seems, er, ill-advised. Probably won't make any difference, though, there's the countervailing pressure for good old military-industrial complex pork.

Cheers, Dan.

I am all for experimentation and limited deployment of the latest protective devices.

That is all that is progected to happen for the next few years at least.

But star wars was a huge program expected to cost billions of dollars. I just do not see an enemy in the world that warrants that kind of expenditure.

Billions of dollars per year does not make a big program as far as the government is conserned. The limited deployment you talk about would cost that but it would barely be noticed as part of the budget. The full blown "star wars" plan would be more expensive but is not something to many people are advocating deploying soon. If we do decide to go ahead a system like that might not be in place for 10 or 20 years, thats why you have to look beyond current threats (which are severe enough all ready to justify some spending in this area).
