While most papers accept at face value Racicot's explanation about his family, the Washington Times, which is well sourced on the right, sees deeper forces at play: "A schism between President-elect George W. Bush and the Republican right was averted yesterday when Gov. Marc Racicot of Montana said he had turned down the position of attorney general. Until that announcement late yesterday, conservatives sought to derail what they had been led to believe would be the appointment of Mr. Racicot to the job that they want to go to Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, their No. 1 choice, or to Missouri Sen. John Ashcroft, their second pick.
